Safe, personalized healthcare by a nurse-midwife means a special skill and understanding of the unique physical, social, and spiritual needs of women. Nurse-midwifery focuses on wellness and consumer choice. Women are encouraged to make informed decisions about their healthcare. CNM's welcome your questions and take time to listen to you and talk to you.

CONTINUITY OF CARE

• The hallmarks of midwifery care are continuity and teaching women to be self-reliant, to trust their own bodies in delivering healthy babies naturally.
• During pregnancy the nurse-midwife monitors you and your baby regularly. She teaches and answers questions about diet, hygiene, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle.
• The CNM will be with you during labor to offer emotional and physical support. If at any time a problem arises, the CNM will call on her consulting physician to assist in protecting you and your baby.
• Nurse-midwives provide advice on breastfeeding and infant care, as well as caring for you during the postpartum period. The CNM will arrange a home visit after your return home.
• Nurse-midwives provide family planning, annual exams, preconception counseling, regular gynecological care, Pap smears, and breast exams. CNM's are qualified to help you maintain health throughout the lifespan from adolescence to beyond menopause.
• The office is conveniently located near downtown Richmond in historic Church Hill. Hospital deliveries are at Chippenham Medical Center in modern birthing rooms. The sponsoring physicians and Henrico Doctors are available for complications and referrals. Appointments can be scheduled for weekdays, with some evening and Saturday hours available.
• Nurse-midwifery services are covered by most insurance carriers, Medicaid, CHAMPUS, and the state employee health plan.
