Statue of Alexander Macomb on Washington Blvd.
General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) was a famous early Detroit native. Macomb County, northeast of Detroit, is named for him. Gen. Macomb was the Adjutant General, and Chief Engineer of the US Army and participated in many battles in the War of 1812. His greatest success came in the Battle of Plattsburgh, where his army repulsed a vastly superior British force. After the war he served as the General-in-Chief of the Army from 1828 until his death in 1841
