Personal Arms~The Most Honarable~The Marquess of Ailsa

The Kennedy name comes from the old Irish Gaelic "cinneidigh", which literally means "ugly headed". The family came from Ireland to Celtic Dalriada, now Strathclyde, but are mainly associated with the district of Carrick in Ayrshire. They can be traced to the early twelfth century. They claimed descent from the first Earl of Carrick and kinship to the Bruce Family which was the Royal Family of King Robert III. The son of that marriage was made Lord Kennedy in 1457, and the third Lord was made Earl of Cassillis. The Kennedy's supported King Robert against the Comyns and throughout the War of Independence. In the fifth generation Gilbert De Carrick's son John assumed or changed his name to Kennedy, and the Clan of Kennedy evolved.

Not all of the legends of this family are what we would today know as legal. For instance the story concerning the infamous fourth Earl, Gilbert who roasted the Abbot of Crossraguel, in order to gain the Abbey lands.

The sixth earl raised an army to fight in the defeats of Alford and Kilsyth and in the Covenanting struggle. They suffered great losses and casualties.

The twelfth Earl was made Baron Ailsa in 1806, and later became the Marquess of Ailsa. Culzean Castle was built between 1775 and 1790 by the ninth and tenth Earls.

The Kennedy's came north when Ulric Kennedy fled from Ayrshire fore breaking the law and they eventually settled in Lochaber where his descendants were known as Clan Ulric. The Kennedy's of Skye trace their descent from this branch of the family.   The Lochaber Kennedy's are an accepted part of the Cameron Sept.

The Dictionary of British Surnames, Second Revised Edition, P. H. Reaney.  London and Boston, 1976, states that Kennedy means "Ugly Headed"

XI.

SIR GILBERT  KENNEDY I,

FOURTH  LORD  KENNEDY & SECOND EARL CASSILLIUS

"Most Rapacious Laird in Carrick"

Dunure Castle

Artist:  Andrew Spratt, Custodian of Dirleton Castle

He was born about 1485, Culzean Castle, Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland and died August 1527, Pow (burn), Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland.  He married Lady Isabel Campbell was the daughter of Sir Archibald Campbell, Second Earl of Argyll and Elizabeth Stewart(Stuart). He earned an infamous reputation by roasting Allan Stewart, Commentator of Crossraguel, in the black vault of Dunmore in order to obtain tracts of abbey land. This took place in 1570, Gilbert kidnapped Stewart and carried him off to Dunure Castle where it is stated that he roasted him on a spit for several days trying to force him to sign over the lands of the abbey. He was known for his greed and he cast looks on the extensive abbey lands, mills, fishing rights and coal sheughs [shallow pits]. Allan Stewart eventually resigned the lands but was released by an enraged Kennedy of Bargany [an estate near Girvan] who then tried to have the lands signed over to himself! The Commendator's [Allan Stewart] emotional and vivid written account of his ordeal shows his signature in a steady had so there appears to have been a great deal of exaggeration in his stories of basting and roasting almost to the point of death. Stewart was a man for whom very few persons had sympathy. He sold of the abbey's wealth over a period of years, including the Lands of Baltersan to David Kennedy of Pennyglen. He fought for Queen Mary when her forces were defeated at the battle of Langside in Glasgow on 13 May 1568. He was later charged with killing several people at that conflict. How strange! Why else would he have been in battle.
