Davies Dies (washingtonpost (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/a Patricia G. Davies Dies By Adam Bernstein Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, May 31, 2000; Page B06 Patricia Grady Davies, 80, a Washington Post society reporter in the early 1940s and the widow of diplomat John Paton Davies Jr., died of cancer May 28 at a hospital in Asheville, N.C. She lived in Asheville since 1978. Mrs. Davies was born in Paris and grew up in Berkeley, Calif. She was a 1940 international relations graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She then came to Washington, where her father, Henry F. Grady, was serving as an assistant secretary of state, and became a society writer for The Post. In her columns "Top Hats and Tiaras" and "Now's the Time," she specialized in interviewing admirals and generals and wrote about cultural figures, such as dancer Martha Graham. Mrs. Davies left The Post in 1943 after marrying Davies, who became one of the "China hands" at the State Department and who then was political adviser to Army Gen. Joseph W. "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell, in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. She traveled with her husband and worked in decoding rooms in China and later in Moscow, when he became first secretary at the U.S. Embassy there after the war. John Paton Davies was fired from the State Department in 1954 during a purge inspired by ill-informed members of Congress who sought diplomats to blame for the "loss" of China to communists. Davies was fired though he was cleared of wrongdoing in several security hearings. After Davies's firing, the couple operated a furniture business in Peru before returning to Washington, where they lived from 1964 to 1971. The State Department officially exonerated him in 1969. During those Washington years, Mrs. Davies wrote a column, "Once Over Lightly," for the Rome Daily American newspaper. She also became a design consultant to William Pahlmann Associates Inc. in New York and Klein & Saks in Washington. The couple later lived in Europe before settling in Asheville, where in the early 1980s, Mrs. Davies produced classical music and news programming at a public radio station. Of her husband's ordeal at State, Mrs. Davies told The Post in 1969: "It's like standing in Rotterdam being bombed. When you are the target, your problems are tremendously simple. . . . It's harder for the people near you; they have the moral dilemmas about whether they should resign, should they have done more, things like that, all kinds of trauma. "But we don't dwell on all that," she added. "Our lives are full. We live very much in the present." Her husband of 57 years died Dec. 23. Survivors include six daughters, Patricia "Tiki" Davies of Washington, Alexandra "Sasha" Davies of White Plains, N.Y., Susan Davies of Chatham, N.Y., Jennifer Davies of Seattle, Megan Davies of New Orleans and Deborah Davies of London; a son, John Grady Davies of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother; and 11 grandchildren. INDEXES: TOP STORIES | NEWS | SPORTS | BUSINESS | TECHNOLOGY | ENTERTAINMENT ------------------------------------------------------------ Filed at 9:05 p.m. EST By The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) -- John Paton Davies, a China expert at the State Department who was fired as a security risk but later regained government clearance, died Thursday in Asheville, N.C. He was 91. Davies, who grew up in China as the son of missionary parents, was let go in 1954 after accusations by the late Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy and others that Davies had undermined U.S. policy and contributed to the Communists victory in China. Secretary of State John Foster Duller fired him in 1954 for ``bad judgment'' in forecasting the defeat of Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist forces during China's civil war that ended in 1949. After his dismissal, Davies wrote: ``When a foreign service officer concludes that a policy is likely to betray national interests ... the safest thing for a bureaucrat to do in such a situation is to remain silent. Or, a foreign service officer can speak out about his misgivings ... knowing he runs serious personal risks in so doing. I spoke out.'' After a long fight to clear his name, Davies was again granted security clearance from the State Department in 1969. The review was requested after Davies was offered a job as a consultant on a disarmament research project. Davies was born in China, attended Yenching University, served as a foreign service officer in China, and was political adviser to Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell, who headed U.S. forces in China, Burma and India during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom following a parachute jump in the Burmese jungle. ``He grew up with China in his blood, with a kind of skeptical love for it, not a naive love for it,'' author David Halberstam wrote in ``The Best and the Brightest.'' Davies also served as first secretary in charge of the political section at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow; as a member of the State Department's policy planning staff; with the U.S. High Commission for Germany; and director of political affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Germany. CBS newsman Eric Sevareid once said of Davies: ``I have known a great number of men. ... I have known none who seemed more the whole man, none more finished a civilized product in all a man should be -- in modesty and thoughtfulness, in resourcefulness and steady strength of character.'' Davies had a long post-government career as a consultant and a writer, particularly after the United States recognized China. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Grady Davies, seven children and 11 grandchildren. As you can see from the note below, it sounds like they will treat the "China hands" rather sympathetically. Do any of you have a photo of your father that would be appropriate for release and that you would be willing to share? I have not shared your addresses with anyone out of concern for your privacy. I would be happy to act on your behalf or to fade into the woodwork at this point, according to your wishes. For my own part, however, I should like to have a photo on file to respond to such requests arising in the future from the web site. I would be happy to pay any expenses involved. Herein is the original request and my response: >>> "Linn, Priscilla R" 05/22/01 11:49AM >>> Dear Mr. Lloyd, I am working with David Patterson, Deputy Historian in the Historian's Office at the Department of State on a revised brief history of the Department to be published this year. To this end we were pleased to see the photo of John Paton Davies on your web site and were hoping we might obtain a copy from you. Please let us know if this is possible, how much it would cost and any copyrights we would need to obtain. If it is not possible to obtain the photo from you, perhaps you might be able to tell us from whom we might get it. Any help you can provide at your earliest convenience would be most welcome. My great, great grandfather was David Davies, brother to Caleb Davies of 'Blaengilfach' farm in Cilrhedyn parish, Pembrokeshire. My great grandfather, John Davies with his brother Issac, went to America to stay with his uncle Caleb for a short while, but I understand that they found they couldn't master the English language and came home to Wales. I have details of the family in Pembrokeshire from the census returns and from chapel monumental inscriptions. I was delighted to find your website as my mother has never seen a photograph of Caleb. I found some details on the internet regarding the names of his children and more information from an elderly cousin of my grandfather, as she and her daughter visited Caleb No.2 in America, they also met Florence Davies, his daughter. I work in the Cardiganshire county record office, therefore my work entails reseaching local and family history every day, at last I know now how my customers feel when they find a new link to the chain! I have been married to Robert, a carpenter for 29 years. My daughter is 28 and works in the National Library of Wales, here in Aberystwyth. My son is in college in Manchester taking a degree course in furniture design. Thank you for making my day, and my mothers' tomorrow. My research has been lengthy and tiring, but I got there in the end, as I am not as computer literate as yourself you may find my information arriving in all forms. Firstly I have the census details for Blaengilfach farm [sometimes known as Caermynach] in Cilrhedyn parish. I have recently found that the family were also at the neighbouring farm of Blaengilfach isaf [lower],also known as Glynmynach, all very confusing and as yet not fully researched. I also have some monumental inscriptions from 'Capel by Graig', in the parish of Trelech, where the family were members, and a few baptismal records. The baptisms are as follows: 1828 June 24th Hannah born May 5th, to David and Hannah Davies, formerly Morris, Blaengilfach, farmer. 1832 October 21st Thomas born September 28th, son of David Davies and Hannah, Blaengilfach. 1836 August 16th David born July 1st, son of David Davies and Anna, formerly Morris of Blaengilfach. Burials in Capel y graig, Trelech parish: (I have translated most of these from Welsh, as the inscriptions are mostly in the language, there are also verses in Welsh on the gravestones, but I haven't included them) 1835 August 3rd John son of David and Hannah Davies, Blaengilfach, 1 yrs old 1836 April 30th Esther Davies, Blaengilfach aged 69, having been a member for 46 years, she died yesterday. 1848 May 2 Anna Davies, Caermynach, aged 43. Also Esther the daughter of David and Anna Davies, who died February 19th, 1846 aged 7months. 1860 March 22 William Davies, Caermynach, in the parish of Kilrhedyn, died aged 92. Also William son of David and Hannah Davies, who died 21st April 1860, aged 30. 1857 August 7th Thomas Davies, Caermynach, Kilrhedyn parish, aged 25 Later burials are of David and Catherine Davies' children: Catherine died October 24th,1900 aged 20. Joshua died September 20th, 1902 aged27. 1921, December 21st David Davies, Cermynach died aged 85. He was a deacon at this chapel for 50 years. Also Catherine his wife died December 26th, 1921 aged 78. 1955, May 28th {who} Anna Davies, Blaengilfach, died aged 77. My Great grandfather John Davies was born 2 May 1867 at Blaengilfach, he married Jemima Williams. His brother Isaac W Davies died 12th April 1935 aged 62years. My grandfather David John Davies was born 4 April 1900 and married Meinir Finwen James 26th February 1925, he died 28th April 1965. My Great grandfather John Davies and his wife Jemima had nine children: Clarence, Arthur, David John (my grandfather), Catherine Anne, Florence,Olwen, Nellie, Esther and Hannah. My mother is Eunice Davies, daughter of David John Davies she was born in Canada January 19th 1931, her parents emigrated to Canada in 1928. She has two older sisters - Mair and Eira, she also had one younger sister-Muriel and the youngest were twins- Lillian and Thomas. They returned to Wales after the twins were born as my grandmother's health failed. It is a long story, but the children were all separated and sent to different homes, my grandmother spent 36 years in hospital. Eira was brought up by John and Jemima, her grandparents, on their farm 'Login' in the parish of Verwig, county of Cardiganshire. As the children were grown into adulthood before they were reunited it was difficult to piece together the family, they each knew a few details. Recently I met Elsie and her daughter Ann, Elsie being the daughter of Isaac Davies, she has a very good memory and is a lovely, lively lady. Isaac married Rachel Cordelia Howells and they had four children- Olwen, Bryn, Cordelia and Elsie. I shall contact her again soon regarding the family history. My mother also married a Davies, the most popular surname here in Wales, next to Jones! I was born 24th September 1954, my brother Eirian born 21st January 1957, he has three children- Thomas 16, Rebecca 14 and Michael 5. My daughter Elaine Victoria Mc Burnie was born 2nd May 1973, and my son Gareth James Mc Burnie was born 22nd July 1981. I have tried to enclose as much information as possible, I will try to attach the census information to this letter, not something I have undertaken before! I do have photographs that I would like to send also, and various other pieces of information, but I shall be going to Cornwall for a few days on Thursday so I will attempt to send you more information then. I hope this information is useful to you, look forward to hearing from you again in the near future. Emma Agnes was my great grandmother and older sister to Helen. One of Helen's nieces---I believe it would have been one of her sister, Margaret's daughters--- lived with the Davies while they ran a girl's school in China. She was a trained stenographer and taught her skills to the Chinese girls. My mother Florence Lois Welsh Wilde, was the daughter of Loretta Wayne Roux, daughter of Emma McNeill and Charles Adolphus Roux, and she met Helen when she was a young girl. You probably don't have anything of John Sr and Helen, but that would have been great too! Helen was the youngest daughter of Ephraim McNeill and Sarah Hawthorn. Sarah was born in Scotland to Hans Hawthorn & Sarah Ward, both of County Down, Ireland. Ephraim was the son of Duncan McNeill & Jane Campbell--all born in Prince Edward Island. Duncan McNeill was the son of Charles MacNeill & Elizabeth Matthews. Charles was born in Scotland and was the son of the commoner Malcolm MacNeill & the daughter of the Duke of Argyll, Elizabeth Campbell. She was disenherited from running off with the commoner MacNeill. They paid for passage to the Carolinas but were diverted to PEI as the ship's captain was bribed by PEI landowners to dump them there. Descendants of Ephraim McNeill Generation No. 1 1. Emma Agnes was my great grandmother and older sister to Helen. One of Helen's nieces---I believe it would have been one of her sister, Margaret's daughters--- lived with the Davies while they ran a girl's school in China. I don't know where you got the extra information, but it is remarkable. Most addresses have changed, of course, but it is good to have it all. I decided that it was a big enough job for me to limit myself to the HBDavies family. You may know about a cousin, Colin Griffith, in Auckland, New Zealand, who is nearly finished with a genealogy of the descendants of Caleb Davies' parents. Colin is a descendant of Caleb's sister, Anna. In a couple of days you will receive the booklet of our "extended family". Grandfather (Caleb) used to live with us in Cleveland Heights periodically. No one used his room when he was not there. The only time I met Ned Pardington, I think, was at our house when Caleb died in 1935. A building is named after his father in Nyack where he was professor. colin.griffiths@thesands.co.nz is the e-M for Colin Griffiths. Dean Yes, I've been to Pardington Hall on a genealogical trip to West Point. Ned's grandfather's (Rayner Stevens Pardington) papers are in the library there. Mama and Papa went to Nyack on their way to Niagra for their honeymoon. I have a few of George Palmer Pardington's books. Thanks for the address of Colin, I have not come across him before. Since you were interested in the Davies Genealogy I sent you, I thought I would send you my whole Davies file. Note that I have not supressed dates for the living or email addresses, so I'm asking that the file not circulate too widely (in the interest of privacy). I hope you can read an RTF file. If you can't let me know and I'll send a text file. Thank you for the story about Ned. It means a lot. Mama attended Agnes Scott and so lived with NANA (aka Anna Lucretia (Davies) Pardington) during her college years. She then attended Hopkins where she obtained an MA in Greek. There she met my father who was working on a PhD in Classics. He had done his undergraduate work at Oberlin (where I think several Davies and Pardingtons had attended). They were married by your first cousin Geo. Palmer Pardington, jr and John Paton Davies, Sr. Papa taught Greek and Latin at Oberlin, Cornell College, and Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, VA. Mama taught Latin at Seven Hills School in Lynchburg and wound up the academic dean. In 1987 she fell down the basement stairs, went into a coma for 12 weeks and died. I myself teach Greek and Latin at St. Margaret's Episcopal School for girls in Tappahannock, VA. I married a bit late and so still have a 2 year old (Mary Livingston) and 4 year old (Kendall Angela). Kendall was going to be Kendall Davies were she a boy. I always have been curious about the Davies side of the family since it was a middle name I shared with my mother (Angela Davies), grandfather (Edward "Ned" Davies), and great grandmother (Anna Lucretia Davies). When Mama died, Papa gave me Mama's pamplet on the desc. of Caleb. Most of the newer info I have gathered by phone interviews (expensive and a bit slow). I was in the middle of interviewing your brother Richard but caught him when he was entertaining guests. He seemed eager to discuss the folks still in Wales and we agreed to talk later and possibly meet in DC. Unfortunately, when I next called he had died. I'm really sorry not to have been able to meet him. He seemed like a great guy on the phone. If you have a photo of H. Bonar that is appropriate for the internet and are willing to share. I would love to post a picture on the Davies page. I'm trying to collect photos of each of the children. So far I only have John and Anna. I read your email with a good deal of interest. I have never been able to get too far with Jonathan before today, but I subscribed to the 1900 census and found out quite a bit. I too had heard that Jonathan died sometime in the 1930's but it is no wonder we couldn't find him in the 1920 or 1930 census. He died in 1915 (see his obit below). I think the difficulty with the death date may have occured because there is another Jonathan M. who was running about. At any rate, it seems now we have another line of Davies other than Caleb's in the US (since Caleb is mentioned by name and location in the obituary). Here is Johathan's obit: Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (Fort Wayne, Indiana) > 9 NOV 1915 col 4 p 2 Davies Fort Wayne friends will be grieved to learn of the death of Jonathan Davies, whose demise occurred Sunday afternoon at the Englewood hospital, Chicago. The deceased had lived here for about ten year previous to moving to Chicago, where he had made his home for the past two year with a daughter. Several children reside in Fort Wayne, and the family is well-known here. Mr. Davies was born in Wales, Jan. 1836, and in two more months would have reached his eightieth year. While his illness was of a short duration it was of such a nature as to necessitate an operation. His advanced age prevented Mr. Davies' recovery from the ordeal. Surviving besides the widow are three daughters as follows: Mrs. Fathauer, of Chicago, and Mrs. Edgar Pierson and Mrs. Henry Trier, of this city; three sons, Ormonde Davies, of Indianapolis,, and Claude H. and Vilier Davies, of this city. There are also six grandchildren. Four brothers and a sister reside in England, and Caleb Davies, a brother, lives in Cleveland. That is my first query right at the start, was she Morris or Maurice. The wisdom my mother inherited was she had a French Father which leans towards Maurice and Caleb named his son Maurice not Morris. Any one any ideas or evidence on this. Thank you Marshall also for your details on Jonathans family, not very prolific early but maybe the following generations got going. There are 17 Fathauers in Chicago phone book and I have emailed 2 of them, so maybe I will get lucky. David, Wales were the most entertaining team there, lets hope they can get some continuance and a local coach after Steve Hansen comes home, we loved that little winger. regards to all. Colin Griffiths ----- Original Message ----- From: David Davies To: colin.griffiths@thesands.co.nz Sent: Tuesday, 30 December 2003 10:04 Subject: Davies family Dear Colin, Sorry it has taken the Cardiff Davies's to take all this time to respond to the interesting info from various parts of the World. The Davies' came from the Parish of Cilrhedyn, North Pembrokeshire located some 2 miles north of the village of Trelech just over the county border in Carmarthenshire. The e-mail from Bob(signed Glenys) provides factual info from the Babtism records of Capel y Graig. This is the Independant chapel in the village of Trelech. Within the graveyard of the chapel you will find a no. of the Davies's graves starting with :- WILLIAM b.1768 d 1860 married ESTHER d 1836 Their son DAVID b 1802 d 1874 first married HANNAH MORRIS b 1805 d 2 May 1848.Hannah died within 2 months of the the birth of their youngest son--Caleb. It is clear from the gravestone that David remarried as his second wife was buried in the same grave. Her name was Margaret who died 8 June 1880. David & Hannah had 9 children :- Hannah b 5 May 1828 William b 1830 Thomas b 1832 d 7 Aug 1857 Jonathan b 1834 d 1935 ( went to Fort Wayne USA) David b 1836 d 1921 (farmed at Blaengilfach-my gt gd father) Isaac b 1838 d (went to Australia) Esther/Joshua b 1845 (Esther d 1846 Joshua went to Abertillery) Caleb b1848 d 1935 (went to Ohio USA) According to my Aunty Else(Francis) Jonathan had a daughter - Mrs Tryer whose daughter became Mrs Pollison. David married Catherine and had 8 children. One of the children was my grand father ISAAC. Isaac's brother John got a girl in trouble so he and Isaac went to the USA and went to work for their uncle(s).John came home within a year but Isaac stayed for about 3 years. Isaac then took over the grocery business of W,F.Rees at Cwmbach, Nr Whitland.W F Rees was originally from Llanboidy. The Rees family were well known grocers in Whitland and Carmarthen. As I have said above it has taken me to the Xmas break to get a few facts together. In due course I will endeavor to obtain more details. I now have an e-mail at home and as I am not to good on the I.T. I will have to send this to my office e-mail in order to copy to the others. I am glad Wales put up a good fight against your Country in the World Cup! David ============ Another indication that Caleb Davies' mother was Anna or Hannah Maurice and not Morris is that Caleb's brother, Jonathan M. Davies (at least according to the Civil Registration for his marriage to Ceely Clarke), is Jonathan MAURICE Davies. Also, I would like to announce that I recently came across a photo of Caleb and his family. Please visit http://community.webshots.com/photo/109186636/109187385gweAmR to see it. Anyone sending me an address is welcome to a 4 X 6 copy. The original was 13 x 17 1/2 and I scanned at 200MB. The photo probably was in Caleb's possession and passed on to his eldest born (Anna Lucretia) who left it to her eldest born (Edward Pardington). It was left in his widow's house. If you want a larger photo, it makes a nice 5 x 7 and a great 8 x 10. Let me know if you are interested. PLEASE consider submitting appropriate Davies photos for the site. I'm pretty good with photoshop and can fix holes, scratches, etc. and would like to share with others. Transcribed and annotated by Marshall Davies Lloyd. AMsS, Estate of Edward Davies Pardington, Jr. ------- Mr & Mrs E[dward]. D[avies]. Pardington Winston-Salem N.C. U S A ---------- Kinhua [China] 9/23/[19]31 Dear Edward--[Edward "Ned" Davies Pardington was the nephew of John Paton Davies through his sister Anna Lucretia Davies who married 30 Jun 1897 George Palmer Pardington. Ned's siblings were Arthur David "David" Pardington (namesake of his uncle Arthur Rayner Pardington, builder of the Lincoln Memorial Highway and the Long Island Motor Parkway), and George Palmer Pardington, Jr.] I believe your birthday [October 23, 1901] is just a month off and Angela's [Ned's oldest daughter Angela Davies Pardington b. October 29, 1926] only a little farther along, so I want to send you a letter of congratulation. May you both have many more such days. We rejoice with you over the first birthday (not birthday anniversary) of lil sister [Ned's second daughter Sarah "lil sister" Sims Pardington b. July 25, 1931]. As your family grows I am sure you are feeling more and more the responsibility of being a husband and father. You are fortunate to have a good position in these times of uncertainty. We are also happy to hear that David is getting into engineering [David was in the US Army Corps of Engineers]. I wonder what George [Palmer Pardington, Jr., who later became an Episcopal minister] will turn to when he gets through college [at Davidson]? Here in China it is almost impossible for a youth in--page break--moderate circumstances to go to college or even to high school. This is partly due to the expense and partly to the scarcity of schools & colleges. Here in Kinhua there are three Junior High Schools to serve the county. This Fall a total of 800 took entrance examinations but only 300 could be accepted by the three schools. We took 120 for our entering class. That means 60 in a section, as we can only afford teachers & classrooms for two sections. But the Chinese are used to crowding and hardship and injustice and inconvenience. Yesterday I was coming in through one of the city gates. I observed that the opening is about 12 feet wide. A blind fortune teller had a table there and took about 5 feet of the passage way. Opposite him a pile of boards used to enclose the fronts of neighboring shops at night occupied two feet. ---page break---That left about 5 feet for traffic at the busiest gate in the city wall. Many of the things that agitate us do not bother these complacent Orientals. We like to call a spade a spade. We declare that right is right and wrong is wrong. But with them men and things are neither black nor white, but gray. They go around with their tongue in their cheek and avoid giving offence. The economic pressure is such that they conclude that ["]duplicity is the best policy." Well, if they were all angels I would be out of a job. As it is I must get busy now preparing an outline of a Bible Study lesson that will be guaranteed to percolate into the cranium of the youngest and stupidest schoolboy of our 260. Please let me know the birthday of Sarah Sims so that I can enter it into the family book. Where did you get the name? [Ned's wife, Doris Gertrude (Chipman) Pardington, had as her maternal grandparents John Hudson and Sarah Ann (Sims) Jordan of Lemington, VT] It sounds very prim and sedate. With love to you & Doris Uncle John 1:43 PM 4/19/2004 10:14 PM 4/19/2004
